Background
The reproductive system is a complex system of organs regulated by a network of hormones with the aim of sexual reproduction. Starting from puberty, sexual hormones regulate the production of sperm in men and of egg in women and the development of secondary sex characteristics. Many disorders and conditions can be identified through the measurement of hormonal levels. Hormonal disorders may cause virilization or hirsutism in women or sexual dysfunction in men or may be a consequence of some pathologic conditions (tumors, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome – PCOS).
