LIAISON® Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Diagnostic Solution
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in pregnant women is associated with high risk of viral transmission to infant at delivery. Identification of HSV (HSV-1 or HSV-2) infection during the course of pregnancy is critical to avoid serious consequences to newborns.

LIAISON® HSV-1 IgG
LIAISON® HSV-1 Type Specific IgG is a CLIA assay for the qualitative determination of IgG antibodies to Herpes simplex virus Type 1 (HSV-1) in human serum.
LIAISON® HSV-2 IgG
The LIAISON® HSV-2 IgG is a CLIA assay for the qualitative determination of IgG antibodies to Herpes simplex virus Type 2 (HSV-2) in human serum or plasma samples.
Background
Herpes simplex virus (HSV), known as herpes, is a common infection. It primarily spreads by skin-to-skin contact. It is treatable but not curable.
There are two forms of the virus:
- Type 1(HSV-1) commonly spreads by oral contact and causes infections in or around the mouth. It can also cause genital herpes. Most adults are infected with HSV-1.
- Type 2 (HSV-2) spreads by sexual contact and causes genital herpes.
HSV-2 reactivation or primary infection during pregnancy is common, but the risk of associated neonatal HSV-2 infection is 10 times greater for women with primary infection in last trimester of pregnancy. Since most individuals infected with HSV-2 are asymptomatic, the serological evaluation of HSV-2 infection can reduce viral transmission.
